Lavender has been used continuously for thousands of years and its popularity has only ever increased. If you could have no other essential oil in your house, then Lavender would be the prime choice: It has a wide range of uses and is a natural antibiotic, anti-depressant, sedative and de-toxifier.

Origin: Lavender comes from the Roman word 'lavare' meaning to 'wash'. Lavender was a favoured aromatic used in their daily bathing rituals. The Greeks burned lavender twigs to ward off plagues but it was the Romans who spread the popularity of this shrub throughout Europe. More recently

Lavender is a very common scent familiar to everyone and of all the oils it is the most versatile and well loved. Lavender comes from an evergreen woody shrub which grows about 1 metre tall and has spikes of a beautiful violet-blue

There are many uses and benefits of lavender oil, which are listed below:

Nervous System: Lavender is perhaps best associated with sleep and can aid insomnia or sleep related disorders due to tension or stress and is excellent for shock related conditions. For migraine and headaches use in a cold compress or place a few drops in boiling water and inhale. The action of Lavender on the heart is tonic and sedative making it valuable for the treatment of palpitations.

Skin Care: Lavender is wonderful for treating burns and as it can be applied directly to the skin it makes a very easy treatment for scalds, sunburn.It is good for allergies, bruises, athletes foot, boils, spots, eczema, scabies, dermatitis, inflammations and acne. Treat sores, spots and boils with a dab of neat Lavender oil.

Respiratory System: Asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, throat infections, whooping cough and halitosis all respond to this oil which can be massaged gently onto the throat, nose or chest, used in the bath or as a steam inhalation combined with Eucalyptus.

Muscles and Joints: It is best used as a massage oil to give relief from muscular aches and pains can be used in a similar way to aid rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, lumbago and sprains.

Genito-urinary System: Lavender is valuable in treating menstrual pain or scanty menstruation and during labour can help to reduce the pain of contractions if massaged into the lower back.

Children and Babies: Lavender can be used to help in minor upsets of infancy where a child is irritable or suffers from colic or other childhood infections. A single drop of Lavender adder to a babys bath can aid sleep.

General: It can also be used as an insect repellent or to protect clothes from moths or other small pests.

Mixing Oils: Lavender blends well with other flower oils such as Geranium and with citrus oils such as Bergamot as well as Pine, Patchouli, Marjoram and Rosemary, Cedarwood, Clary Sage and Clove.
